2024 Rule Changes

                                 2024 Rule Changes

New jersey numbering rule adopted in 2019 now "law"

Rule 1-5-1-c(5,6): In 2019, This rule was modified to require that the body of the number of the player's jersey must be a single solid color that clearly contrasts to the color of the jersey. The "outlined" numbers where the number and color of the jersey are the same (or not a clearly contrasting color) are no longer allowed and now illegal. The NFHS gave notice of this anticipated change 5 years ago to give schools time to "use up" their old jerseys and come into compliance with the new requirement.

As of the 2024 season, if a team uses improperly numbered jerseys, the team should be assessed a 15 yard Unsportsmanlike Conduct foul for using illegal equipment prior to the opening kickoff. The foul can be but by philosophy shouldn't be charged to the head coach. The referee should clearly communicate the foul to both head coaches during the pregame conference, as it may affect the team's choice after the coin toss.

NNFOA Note: The NNFOA Commissioner has done his due diligence in communicating this rule change in each of the prior 3 seasons with all Athletic Directors and Head Coaches in the area the NNFOA serves, so the change should come as no surprise to anyone.

As of March 1, the NFHS has not published any other rule changes for 2024, but they are expected soon.  Check back here for updates.
